The City is divided into five boroughs, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and the Bronx. The majority of New York City’s land is comprised of the three islands of Long Island. Apart from the heavily congested areas of the downtown, New York City contains 28,000 acres of municipal parkland and 14 miles of public municipal beaches. The 235 skyscrapers that line the City’s vast skyline reveal the substantial impact of human intervention on the land. The City’s landscape reflects the evolution of technology and the influence of urban development on the land. Located in the Northeastern United States, the City of New York encompasses a diverse range of geographical and social elements.
